Get this from a library! Korea [Orlando Ward; United States. Department of the Army. Office of Military History.] -- The story of the Korean War in photographs and brief narratives. T hough the Korean War started on this day 65 years ago—J —when North Korean tanks crossed the 38th parallel, the boundary with South Korea, TIME’s reporting from the following.
At the end of the Korean War, after 2 years of negotiation, an armistice was signed on J , at Panmunjom on the 38th parallel. A demilitarised zone was set up which stands to this day. With the outbreak of hostilities in Korea on J , Eighth Army would face another major challenge. Due to the tactical situation that existed during the first six weeks of the Korean War, Republic of Korea and US ground forces were compelled to conduct an economy of force mission.
In December of , the crew of the SS Meredith Victory, a modestly-sized Merchant Marine ship, performed what the Guinness Book of World Records refers to as “the greatest rescue operation. However, one should remember that Korea had been divided arbitrarily by the US and the USSR after World War II. The 38th Parallel was a made-up boundary with no historical precedent or resonance, and so, in a sense, the North Korean attack might be considered part of an internal, civil war to unify a single country that shared the same culture.
